Place on ice immediately after collection.

A fasting specimen is recommended as synthesis of homocysteine continues in red blood cells after drawing. It is important to centrifuge and promptly (within one hour), separate plasma from the red cells or gel separator. Separated samples may be stored for 2 weeks at 2-8 C.

Samples may be kept on ice for up to1hr prior to separation if there is a delay in centrifugation.
