Testing Lab: Labcorp

Specimen Info
Only 1 specimen type required, unless otherwise specified

Volume: 2.0 mL Serum and 1.5 mL CSF
Temperature: Refrigerate/Ambient
Tube Type: Serum and CSF
Collection Info:
Minimum Volume: 0.8 mL serum and 0.6 mL CSF Sample Requirements for Multiple Sclerosis Profile Profile Components CSF Preferred CSF Minimum Serum Preferred Serum Minimum Notes *IgG synthesis rate and IgG: albumin ratio (CSF) within the multiple sclerosis profile utilize the same IgG and albumin (CSF and serum) results from the IgG index for calculations; therefore, no additional sample is required. Oligoclonal banding 0.5 mL 0.1 mL 0.5 mL 0.1 mL Serum and CSF must be collected at the same time. IgG index* 1 mL 0.5 mL 1.5 mL 0.7 mL Includes IgG and albumin on CSF and serum Total sample required: 1.5 mL 0.6 mL 2.0 mL 0.8 mL
Collection: Collect serum and CSF at the same time. Avoid contaminating CSF with blood. Centrifuge CSF at 1500xg for 20 minutes and place the supernatant into separate tubes. Ensure that residual fibrin and cellular matter have been removed.

Specimen Acceptability

Cause for Rejection:
Plasma instead of serum specimen; serum AND CSF NOT collected within eight hours of each other

Methods

Oligoclonal banding: IEF; CSF IgG, CSF albumin, and serum IgG: immunologic; serum albumin: spectrophotometry; synthesis rate, ratio, and index by calculation
