Collection Info:
Prefer a minimum sample size of 0.5 to 1 cm3, if possible. Solid tissue samples should be collected in sterile manner and the tissue sample must be fresh and be of pure tumor if possible, without necrosis.  Place specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container with sterile Hank's solution, Ringer's solution, or normal saline. The specimen must not be placed in fixative or frozen.  Label containter with patient's name and a unique identifying number (MGHS encounter # or MR#). To maintain viable cells, transport immediately.
SPECIMENS CANNOT BE FROZEN.

Methods

Includes GTG banding, analysis of 20 or more metaphases, and karyograms for each cell line. Further studies, including FISH techniques, may be necessary.

Clinical Utilities

Chromosome analysis is useful for assisting in the diagnosis and classification of certain malignant hematological disorders, evaluating the prognosis in patients with certain malignant hematological disorders, monitoring the effects of treatment, and monitoring patients in remission.
