Collection Info:
Prefer a minimum of 3.0 mL of bone marrow or 5.0 mL of malignant blood. Draw into sodium heparin tube(s), invert several times to mix (clotted specimens may compromise results). Label vial with the patient's name and a unique identifying number.  Maximum time from collection should not exceed 24 hours.

Methods

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) Interphase set-up and analysis of 200 cells for chromosome centromeres 4, 10 and 17 and rearrangement of MLL gene; minimum of 500 nuclei for BCR/ABL1 fusion and ETV6/RUNX1 fusion.

Clinical Utilities

Detection of abnormalities involving hyperdiploidy (trisomy of chromosomes 4, 10 & 17), rearrangement of the MLL gene, t(9;22) BCR-ABL1 and t(12;21) ETV6-RUNX1 fusion most commonly associated with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
