CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) - sterile capped plastic tubes.
Other fluids - Preferably in green top (sodium heparin) evacuated tubes. Red top and EDTA are also acceptable.

Methods
Hemacytometer counting chamber and Wright stained smear.
Clinical Utilities
Gross examination, RBC, WBC, and differential on CSF, Pleural, Peritoneal, Synovial, Ascitic, abdominal or other type fluid.
* Examine fluid specimens promptly as both red and white cells may begin lysis within 2 hours of collection. *
If a delay is anticipated, refrigerate specimens to prevent any decrease in cell counts.
CSF should be examined immediately as cell lysis can occur soon after collection.
