Clinical Utilities

• The BioPlex 2200 HSV-1 & HSV-2 IgG is not intended to be diagnostic for infectious disease and should only be interpreted in the context of other laboratory findings and the total clinical presentation of the patient.
• Samples collected too early in the course of the infection may not have detectable levels of HSV IgG.  Negative HSV-2 results may be due to delayed seroconversion.
• Timing of specimen collection for paired sera may be critical.  In some patients, antibody titers may rise to significant levels and fall again to lower or undetectable levels with a month.  Other patients may not develop significant antibody levels.
• Possible cross reactivity with E.coli, the recombinant vector for the gG1 antigen, has not been evaluated by itself.
• These tests cannot differentiate between recent and old infections, negative HSV-2 antibody results could be due to recent infections attributed to the slow time to seroconversion of the gG-2 response.  A positive result does not rule out primary or no-primary episodes.
• HSV serology cannot distinguish genital from no-genital infections.
• Immune complexes or other immunoglobulin aggregates present in patient samples may cause increased non-specific binding and produce false positive results.  However, the BioPlex 2200 HSV-1 & HSV-2 IgG kit incorporates a Reagent Blank Bead (RBB) with each test that verifies the absence of significant non-specific binding in serum.
• The predictive value of positive or negative results depends on the population's prevalence and the pretest likelihood of HSV-1 and HSV-2.
• The numerical value of the final result above the cutoff is not indicative of the amount of anti-HSV-1 and 2 IgG antibody present.
